Reporting to the Vice President of Administration and Finance, the Chief of Police has primary responsibility for managing the department of Campus Security, which encompasses all administrative, operational, and financial responsibilities for a 24-hour/365 days-a-year department of 26 full-time and 21 part-time staff. The Chief of Police will manage patrol, crime prevention, officer recruitment and training, crime statistic reporting, special event security, access control, community relations, and other safety services. Of significant import, the Chief will lead the department in making the transition from campus security to sworn officer status under Commonwealth of Virginia law. The Chief works closely with a variety of campus and local constituents to develop and implement programs and services related to the welfare and safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors, the protection of university property, and the prevention of crime. The position manages an annual budget of $1.3 million.

Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years relevant experience in law enforcement, or an equivalent level of training and experience. The successful candidate will also possess: strong leadership and problem-solving skills; ability to engage in strategic planning, program development, and manage organizational change; ability to develop a business plan, analyze financial data, and manage a departmental budget; excellent interpersonal skills including conflict management, community outreach, customer service, and public speaking; ability to hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff; and familiarity with regulatory agency requirements including OSHA, JACHO, Campus Security Act, FERPA, EPA, etc. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of current issues in law enforcement, crime prevention, public safety, student life, and the needs/issues of a campus community. Candidates must be current or previously sworn officers with the ability to acquire Virginia DCJS law enforcement certification. Experience in a college or university setting and IAHSS certification are preferred characteristics.
